Who is God?

You may have heard Christians talk about God. You may have worked out that God is talked about in the Bible. But perhaps that is as much as you know about Him. The fact you are reading this article indicates that you probably want to know some more about Him. This article will attempt to answer the question: Who is God?

God is a Being who created the universe and all that is in it. He created everything from the biggest stars in the universe, known as “red supergiants,” right down to the intricate atoms in a cell. He is all-powerful, all-knowing, and omnipresent (present everywhere simultaneously). But He is also personal in character in that He knows of the existence of each human being and animal on the planet. It sounds amazing, doesn’t it?

Where did God come from?

We do not know where God came from, for God has chosen not to reveal this information to us. What we do know is stated in the Bible:

Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever you had formed the earth and the world, even from everlasting to everlasting, you are God.
Psalm 90:2

So while generations of men come and go, God exists as a power from age to age.

Your throne is established from of old; you are from everlasting.
Psalm 93:2

This sovereignty has been for eternity and does not have a beginning or end. This stability in His reign is able to stabilize the moral order of the world. If His reign were not there, the world’s moral order would eventually collapse. God reigns over the people on this earth and will judge them (through His Son, Jesus Christ).

Say among the nations, “The Lord reigns! Yes, the world is established; it shall never be moved; He will judge the peoples with equity.”
Psalm 96:10

God is King, and His throne has been for eternity, having neither beginning nor end.

I said, “O my God, do not take me away in the midst of my days; your years are throughout all generations. Of old you laid the foundation of the earth, and the heavens are the work of your hands. They will perish, but you will endure; yes, they will all grow old like a garment; like a cloak you will change them, and they will be changed. But you are the same, and your years will have no end. The children of your servants will continue, and their descendants will be established before you.”
Psalm 102:24–28

From the above quotes, it is clear that God has no beginning and no end.

For a thousand years in your sight are like yesterday when it is past, and like a watch in the night.
Psalm 90:4

God’s timelessness is highlighted with the words from this verse. God looks back on a thousand years that have just passed like a day passes into “yesterday.” Or as the Psalmist says, “like a watch in the night,” which is even shorter, being a mere four hours according to the Hebrew night watch for guards.

But, beloved, do not forget this one thing, that with the Lord one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day.
2 Peter 3:8

This is emphasizing how finite, vain, and meaningless humans are in comparison with God, to whom time is meaningless. Man’s days are limited, and therefore he should set his mind on thinking about God, who can provide mercy and future eternity. Yet, so many men and women live out their lives never really knowing God.

There is also the inescapable fact that there will be a point in time where there will be judgment for mankind.
To God, time is only a relative term, for He is from everlasting to everlasting. God created time for man to live in. The progress of the years means nothing to Him who is above and beyond all measurements of time. His age does not advance. Nations may come and go, but He continues from eternity to eternity.
